French writer Joris-Karl Huysmans’ novel À Rebours (translated to English as Against Nature or Against the Grain) can be described as mostly a catalogue of protagonist Jean des Esseintes’ aesthetic tastes. I’m an ignorant man with an education that left many holes, so while I was reading the book I needed to look up most of the works mentioned. Here is some of what I found:

“Execution of about 350 persons, Alzey, 1529.” One of Jan Luiken’s etchings in the Martyrs Mirror (full title: The Bloody Theater or Martyrs Mirror of the Defenseless Christians who baptized only upon confession of faith, and who suffered and died for the testimony of Jesus, their Saviour, from the time of Christ to the year A.D. 1660).
