A section — sometimes also called a gathering or signature — is a group of sheets which are folded in half and inserted inside each other to then become the pages of a book. Books with many pages will have several sections, but these notebooks here only have one section, each made up from 20 folded sheets. This makes them simpler books to bind, as a few steps are left out which I would have to do if they had more pages.

10,5 x 14 cm (4 1/8 x 5 1/2 in). 40 pages fountain pen friendly paper (Rhodia Ivory Brushed Vellum Paper, 90 gsm/41lb). The covering papers are Strathmore 300 Series Printmaking paper (120gsm, acid free) marbled using marbling colors from Jacquard. The kids and I made some suminagashi marbled paper some time back, which I used for end papers (but you can’t see them in the photo). Photo: Martin Høyem
