I love me a little bit of lab vibes in the shed, stuff that makes it look as if I’m doing serious things, mysterious, alchemy-like.

These two bottles have been sitting on my shelf for a few years now. They contain potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate. I mixed those two chemicals from powder, and both have a pretty long shelf life. But after I mix the two of them together to create the cyanotype sensitizer, the resulting concoction needs to be used in a matter of days.

They also have scary sounding names, especially that one called potassium ferricyanide. But while it may irritate your skin and eyes, potassium ferricyanide isn’t very dangerous — it’s not the same as cyanide.

Potassium ferricyanide. I dissolved 40 g of this powder into 400 ml of water and then set aside for 24 hours before using. Photo: Martin Høyem

Ferric ammonium citrate. It has clumped together a little after storing it for a few years, but I would think it is still usable. I dissolved 100 g of this powder into 400 ml water and then set aside for 24 hours before using. Photo: Martin Høyem
