Leopoldo Méndez (1902-1969) was a Mexican printmaker. In 1937, together with Pablo O’Higgins, and Luis Arenal, he founded Taller de Gráfica Popular, an artist collective in Mexico City whose goal it was to produce visually compelling and affordable prints with a clear political message.
Méndez — and the other artists at Taller de Gráfica Popular — preferred to work collectively and anonymously. Because of this, and possibly because of his socialist and communist beliefs, the art world has not been overly interested in Méndez’s work. This would probably be of little concern to him, since his ideology was to produce art not for commercial gain but rather for the gain of society, to raise awareness, and to spur social change.
